Polish countertenor Rafał Tomkiewicz praised by the press for his “powerful, clear and masculine sounding voice” and his “captivating role portraits”, and from early childhood trained at the violin, studied at the Frédéric Chopin Music University in Warsaw, completing his education at the Opera Academy of Polish National Opera in Warsaw, as well as in masterclasses with Hedwig Fassbender, Eytan Pessen and Matthias Rexroth, for whom he in July 2023, on a short call, overtook <Nomi-Omni, in memoriam Klaus Nomi> at KlangARTVision in Halle. In Halle, Mr. Tomkiewicz in also performed IDELBERTO in Händel's "Lotario" and CLEOFE in Händel's "La Resurrezione" (also on CD), accompanied by the Händelorchester Halle under the baton of Attilio Cremonesi at the International Händel-Festival Halle, CLEOFE also led him to the International Händel-Festival in Karlsruhe, to which he will return in the title-role of Händel's SIROE in the openings-premiere in 2024. Further committments for 2023/24/25 include the title-role of Händel's AMADIGI di GAULA with the Sofia Baroque at the Bulgarian Nationaltheater / Opera Sofia and in the Opening's Premiere of the International Händel Festival Halle in the Opera Halle; 1. SHEPHERD in Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo" with L'Arpeggiata and Christina Pluhar at the ICE Kraków; SANCTUS PETRUS in Hasse's "Sanctus Petrus et Sancta Maria Magdalena" at Baroque Scene in Bydgoszcz, ALTUS in Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" at Zielona Góra, SWAN in Orff's staged "Carmina Burana" at the Warsaw Chamber Opera in Warsaw; UNULFO in Händel's "Rodelina" at the Baroque Festival / Polish Royal Opera; and ATHAMAS in Händel's "Semele" at the Arte Athene, in a produktion by the International Händel-Fest Göttingen in stage direction and under the baton of George Petrou, with whom Mr. Tomkiewicz also performed' NIRENO in Händels "Giulio Cesare" in Göttingen and at the Dutch Nederlandse Reisopera; as well as SWAN in Orff's "Carmina Burana" as debut with the BBC Orchestra Wales. Furthermore, he appeared in the recent past as in the parts by J.J. Fux PORSENNA in "Costanza e Fortezza" and BACCHUS in "Arianna" at the Styriarte Graz, in the title-role of AMADIGI di GAULA at Staatstheater Meiningen and the Theatre Ulm, where he also sang baroque-music, but also operetta, musical and pop melodies in New-Years-Concerts. He sang Bachs "Johannes-Passion" in the famous Golde Hall of the Wiener Musikverein and with the Beethovenorchester Bonn; SWAN in Orffs „Carmina Burana“ led him under Jaime Martín with the National Symphony Orchestra to the National Concert Hall Dublin and Händels "Israel in Egypt" under Jan Willem de Vriend to the Polish PhilhamronyWarsaw.
Further commitments led him as ANASTASIO in Händel’s “Giustino” and TAMERLANO in Vivaldi’s „Bajazet“ to the Kammeroper Wien; the title-role in Peter Eötvös RADAMES to the Teatro Comunale di Bolzano and the Theater Biel/Solothur; BACCHUS in Fux’ “La Corona d’Arianna” tot he Styriarte Graz; the Händel-part of TOLOMEO to the Grand Opera Poznań; BERTERIDO and UNULFO in „Rodelina“ to the Polish Royal Opera Warsaw ; NARCISO in “Agrippina” to the Drama per Musica Baroque Festival in Warsaw; the title-role of Cavalli’s GIASONE to the Collegium Nobilium Warsaw; and NINO in Stradella’s “Il Trespolo tutore” to the Collegium Nobilium in Warsaw; as well as with the Ensembles Nostre Marum to the Festival Barocco Alessandro Stradella di Viterbo e Nepi, where he also recorded the world-wide 1st DVD of this work. It’s releases on CD was nominated as “Best CD in the category opera” at the “Award of the German recordings 2020”.
Due to Covid, Mr. Tomkiewicz’s debut at Theater an der Wien as WITCH OF ENDER in Händels „Saul“ under Christopher Moulds and in stage direction of Claus Guth only was shown as Live Stream (DVD recording); and his debut at Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, as well as his participation at the Young Singers Project of the Salzburg Festival, with appearances in concerts and in the world-premiere “About a star, which couldn’t shine” had to becancelled completely.
Next tot he already mentioned, his further concert repertoire, which he has performed at the Grand Opera Poznań, the Seminary-Church Warsaw, at Unimus Koblenz, the Annum Baroque Festival, the Philharmony Kraków, Philharmony Opole and the Grand Hall of the Royal Castle Warsaw with the Ensemble Il Tempo & Ensemble Ars Chori, Musica Antiquae Collegium Varsoviensis, Vocal Ensemble of the Chamber Opera, La Chapelle Vocale de Lausanne, Ensemble Vocal Heinrich Schütz and Ensemble Baroque du Léman Genève é Lausanne, includes HAMOR in Händel’s “Jephta” and his “Messiah”, Bach’s "Christmas Oratorio”, “Magnificat” and "Cantatas", Pergolesi’s "Stabat Mater", Bernstein’s "Chichester Psalm” and Antonio Teixeira’s "Te Deum". In addition, he appears in <3 Countertenor’s Concerts> all over Poland.
The artist had the pleasure working with conductors and stage directors such as Benjamin Bayl, Felix Bender, Attilio Cremonesi, Marcello Chryssicos, James Darrah, Andrea de Carlo Roberto Diaz-Cajamarca, Paul Esswood, Krzysztof Garstka, Hinrich Horstkotte, Andrzej Klimczak, Kristian Lada, Christopher Moulds, Liliana Stawarz or Jan Willem de Vriend.
His competition-successes include, among others, the 1st Prize at <III. Krystyna Jamroz Competition 2017> and the Special Award for Young Talents at the <IV. International Baroque Competiion> in Poznań. In addition, he was a Finalist at the renowend <International Antonio Cesti Competition for Baroque Opera 2018> at Innsbruck Festival for Baroque Music. And since 2024, Mr. Tomkiewicz is Dr. Rafal Tomkiewicz.
